September 10, 2019 – Earthquake Preparedness

Venue: Builders’s Exchange of Santa Clara.

Overview:

The presentation will explain steps to take to prepare for an earthquake and what to do before during and after.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Teach participants how to protect themselves during an earthquake.
  2. Explain how to make a family plan
  3. Provide tips on how to build an emergency kit.

Presenter Bio:

Bill O’Callahan has over 25 years experience working for disaster services, emergency response and training. He has worked at the American Red Cross Disaster Services, San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office of Emergency Services, Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) and presently a volunteer at the American Red Cross. He has provided disaster response, victim services and training for numerous major disasters in Northern California including: floods and mudslides in 1982, 1984, 1987, 1991’s Oakland Hills Firestorm, and 1992’s Hurricane Andrew. He also responded to several earthquakes: 1985’s Coalinga Earthquake, 1987’s Whittier Narrows Earthquake, 1989’s Loma Prieta Earthquake and 1994’s North Ridge Earthquake. When he worked at San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office of Emergency Services, he focused on emergency management, planning, training and response for numerous local events, fires, hazmat incidents and 2010’s San Bruno Pipeline Explosion. As part of PG&E, he was the Gas Emergency Preparedness Coordinator and focused on  planning, training, exercise and response duties. He responded to numerous gas emergency events including 2014’s Napa Earthquake. From 2017 to present, he is a Red Cross volunteer in San Mateo County and has focused on emergency preparedness training and government liaison. He has responded to 2017’s Hurricane Irma and 2018’s Paradise Fire 2018.
