The US Forest Service faced a crisis of trust that was undermining communications and information flow. The result was an abysmal accident rate. This talk will explore field initiatives and leadership actions that began to change the organization’s approach to learning. Three key pillars will be introduced: The leadership safety journey, field initiatives to change the way the organization responded to accidents and incidents, and some of the research that underpinned the changes that took place.

About the Presenter:
Ivan is an international speaker and consultant focused on Risk, Safety, Aviation, Wildland Firefighting and Human & Organizational Performance (HOP).
His ability to integrate academic research with real world application comes from his varied life experiences, which culminated in his promotion to the position of Director of the Office of Innovation and Organizational Learning for the U.S. Forest Service.
As a U.S. Forest Service Director, Ivan developed and implemented the Learning Review, which is a process designed to improve how organizations of all sizes, and at all levels respond to accident, incident and unplanned outcomes. The Learning Review is centered on understanding and mapping systemic conditions that influence human decision making and actions.
Ivan represented the Forest Service at the Obama Wight House, where he presented Learning Review and HOP concepts during a forum on wildfire firefighter safety.
Ivan holds an Airline Transport Pilot License and has over 10,000 flight hours as a tactical pilot for the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Air Force Reserve and the Forest Service, additionally, he has been trained and qualified as both a aircraft maintenance officer and USAF accident investigator.
Ivan earned a Masters of Science degree in Human Factors and Systems Safety at the world famous Lund University in Sweeden. He completed his PhD in Social Psychology and Organizational Culture at Tilburg University in The Netherlands. In addition to his thriving consultancy, Professor Pupulidy, is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Alabama, and a guest lecturer at Yale University.
